Glossary

LIMA: Least invasive, minimally aversive. The ethical standard that my training conforms to at all times.

CCPDT: Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. This national certifying organization certifies trainers through rigorous examination and documentation.ccpdt.org

APDT: Association of Pet Dog Trainers. I am a professional member of this organization.APDT.com

BAT : Behavioral Adjustment Training A method for helping dogs to raise their tolerance to triggers like other dogs, strangers and children without aggressive reactions. grishastewart.com/bat

CLICKER Training: The use of a small, hand held gadget to make a noise. This noise is used to givequick, positive feedback to trainee pets.

CAT: Concentrated Aggression Training A method used to change aggressive reactions to triggers at varying distances.

Loose Leash Walking The goal for all dogs and their companions! Walking without pulling and jerking.

Obedience vs Behavioral Training They can be used interchangeably. I like to use the word behavioral as in what the dog does under what condition. Dogs repeat what gets them their rewards. What feels good. What works. Dogs stop performing when an action doesnt work or make them feel good.

Reactive dogs: Dogs who show very high levels of stress-based aggression upon sensing triggering stimuli. These dogs often bark, lunge or bite when they encounter a triggering stimulus. For example, a dog barks and lunges forward on his leash when he sees another dog and walker approaching.

Separation Anxiety; Dogs who feel a high level of anxiety when left alone. These dogs often become stressed when they sense that their family may be leaving for work and school. Dogs experiencing true separation anxiety destroy walls, furnishings etc. Dogs with SE who are crated may chew at metal crates causing serious injuries to their paws, mouths and teeth.

Why don't you use the word dominance? Training of dog companions has come a long way, especially in the last 25 years! Decades of experience and scientific study have mostly disproved that dog training should be based on old studies involving wolf packs. Today, experienced trainers have seen that one need not harshly force dogs to see us as BIG DOGS.A good relationship with our K9 companions stems from communication, trust, understanding and time. We need not force our pets to submit and obey. That doesn't work and doesnt foster trust and a healthy relationship. Dogs want to please us and want to have secure comfortable lives. These are the goals of Latch Key Pets.
